Michael Chisholm (FS/AC 70-75).

“I attended the funeral service of Michael Chisholm on 2 April 2026 at Carlisle Crematorium.

His passing was a tremendous shock. ‘Chis’ as he was known to friends, was approaching 70 years of age and wanted to be in prime condition. Every day he went swimming, cycling, and always an evening walk in Rickerby Park, Carlisle.

We first met back in 1963 at junior school, Saint Gabriel’s, Carlisle. We also sang together in in the parish church choir at Saint Cuthbert's, Carlisle. He lived with his mother and sister in the cathedral grounds in a ‘grace and favour’ grade one house, only a short walk away.

Our paths crossed again at St Bees. Chis played 1st XV rugby and was a Brown Belt at Judo.

After school He went to Saint Andrews University in Scotland and gained a 1st Class Honours degree in Divinity. Then, after passing his HGV Licence, he went to Australia for a year driving wagons and taxis.

On his return he went to Newcastle University, gaining a degree in Law, then took his Bar Exams, finishing in the top six. Although accepted in Chambers, he chose not to practise.

‘Chis’ was ‘his own man’ and took a position with Carlisle City Council operating their refuse department. It was very fitting that the Council sent a refuse wagon to his funeral.

After retirement, he worked for Eddie Stobart Logistics, driving an HGV as a happy pastime.

He was a genial character, who has gone too soon. He leaves a wife and partner of 42 years, Irene, and his sister, Felicity.

We will not see his like again.”
